Philosophy on teacher licensing:

"Teacher licensing is important to me because it signifies I am qualified to teach in the teaching profession. In other words, I have met the standards and requirements of a professional in the teaching profession set by the board of teachers and administrators.

"Teacher licensing sets the teaching profession in high esteem comparable to other professions and encourages our brightest and best students to consider the teaching profession. Teacher licensing will strengthen our public school system to have qualified educators teaching in our schools and a system to sustain quality in the teaching force.

"I am committed to support professional and teaching excellence in our public schools because I believe every child should have a highly qualified teacher who has met standards that uphold excellence, effectiveness and ethics."

Goals as an HTSB Board member:

"Serving on the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board is a way to collaborate with educators and work on policies affecting education in Hawaii that will contribute to excellence in our schools and improved student learning. For the benefit of our students, I want to serve and participate in building the teaching profession and work on educational issues concerning licensing, teacher preparation and accomplished teaching.

"I have learned that the board is responsible for the teaching profession in the areas of appropriate competencies: education, preparation, knowledge and skills and for issuing, renewing, revoking, suspending and reinstating teacher license. It strives to make the teaching profession self governing and ensure that educational professionals are highly qualified for our public schools according to the HTSB's licensing standards.

"The work of the board is worthy of my time, effort and support in order to establish the professionalism in teaching."

The Hawaii Teacher Standards Board was created to improve the quality of the teaching profession by ensuring that teachers hired in the State of Hawaii are fully licensed and qualified to teach in the subject area(s) in which they were hired.
