CTE PERMIT

A one-year Career and Technical Education Limited Duty Special Permit may be renewable annually for no more than five (5) years to an applicant who:

  1. Is recommended by the Hawaii Department of Education to provide instruction in career and technical education in Hawaii public schools; and
  2. Holds a valid trade/industry license or certification, if such a license or certification exists for the trade/industry; and
  3. Has completed three (3) years of satisfactory full-time trade/industry experience in the field in which instruction will be offered.

CTE Limited Duty Special Permits may be renewed each year provided the permit holder applies for the permit and continues to meet the requirements of the permit.  Your permit expires on the last day of the school year in which it is issued. You must reapply for the CTE Limited Duty Special Permit every year, up to five years.

The following documents are required for the CTE Limited Duty Special Permit Application.   Applicants should periodically check our website for changes to the requirements/documentation.

2. If you answer "yes" to a question in the Professional Fitness section on the application, Section 2, you will be contacted to submit additional documentation.

3. The permit fee of $48 may be paid online once all other criteria are met. You may also submit a cashier's check or money order in the amount of $48 per year made payable to the Hawai'i Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) with your application.
