PRAXIS Information for Hawaii

Hawaii Test Requirements

New Changes To Praxis Requirements:

1.  Composite scores for Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) will not be accepted for tests taken after July 1, 2011, so the individual PPST Reading, Writing and Mathematics tests must be "Passed."  For PPST tests taken prior to July 1, 2011, the composite score will still be accepted and the Educational Testing Score (ETS) report will indicate that the PPST requirement is "Met."

2.  Effective August 1, 2011, the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) will not be required for licensure for applicants who will have completed a State Approved Teacher Education Program (SATEP) in Hawaii, another state, or a non-U.S. country, prior to obtaining their Hawaii license.  Only out-of-state licensed teachers applying under the Experience Route, meaning they have never completed a SATEP, will be required to take the PLT after August 1, 2011. If applying under the Experience Route, you should review the ETS Praxis webpage for information about the PLT.

Important Information:

Hawaii Teacher Standards Board testing requirements have recently changed. Only tests currently required by HTSB are listed here. There is a transition period for "old" and "new" tests, so applicants who have taken previously required tests should check with HTSB on whether those tests can still be used for licensure.

Find your licensure area below to determine which test you need to take. To learn more about a specific test, click the test title. Once you know which test(s) are required, find out how to register for Praxis™ tests.  Please note:

1) Test takers should confirm test dates when they register with ETS and should indicate Code 8620 when they register for a test so their score report will be sent directly to HTSB.

2) Not all tests are available on all dates. Applicants are urged to contact ETS to determine when their required tests are offered during the year to ensure they are able to complete their testing requirements.

3) Current NBPTS-certified and MNTC licensed teachers holding a current, valid license from another state are exempt from all Praxis examinations.

4) Those with valid out of-state licenses should refer to the Standard License Application instructions regarding required tests to see if you are able to use licensure tests from your state instead of taking the Hawaii tests.

5) Teacher candidates should periodically check this webpage for any updates to Hawaii's testing requirements.

Note:  For information about a specific test, go to the ETS/Praxis/requirements webpage.

Beginning teachers in all content areas must pass three Praxis I tests in either format:

Note: Composite scores for PPST will not be accepted for tests taken after July 1, 2011.  For PPST tests taken prior to July 1, 2011, the composite score will be accepted and the ETS score report will indicate that the PPST requirement is "Met."
