You must meet the following criteria to Add a Field to your existing Hawaii license.
All required forms and documentation must be submitted before your application can be reviewed. Incomplete applications can not be processed. Applicants are responsible for submitting all required materials.
Teachers may add an additional teaching field to a Hawaii Standard or Advanced License by submitting the following documents and using one of the"Add a Field" methods:
1. Submit an application.
Download the application for Adding a Field to an Existing Hawaii Teaching License. Submit your signed, dated application to HTSB.
2. If you answer "yes" to a question in the Professional Fitness section on the application, Section 2, you must submit the following with your application:
a) Your signed statement with full explanation for each circumstance or incident, including the state in which the complaint, lawsuit, investigation or adverse action occurred and the disposition of the matter, as well as relevant explanation of the circumstances;
AND
b) Certified copies of official court records for criminal convictions and official or notarized copies of documentation of other matters;
AND
c) Two letters of recommendation addressed to the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board from people who have known you in a professional capacity within the last five years. References should include their telephone and email contact information as the letters will be verified.
Additional documentation may be requested after the evaluation of your documents.
NOTE: Failure to disclose information or providing false or deceitful answers can lead to denial of your application, adverse action on the license, and/or criminal prosecution.
3. Submit proof of one of the following options, A, B or C:
OPTION A: Complete a State Approved Teacher Education Program (SATEP)
Download HTSB Institutional Recommendation from our website. Complete the top portion and send it to the institution where you completed your SATEP. The institution should return it to HTSB.
NOTE: If you complete a Hawaii SATEP you do not have to submit an Institutional Recommendation as your institution will submit verification directly to HTSB.
OPTION B: Teaching experience and coursework from a state approved teacher education program
Download Verification of Satisfactory Experience form and give to your school principal to fill out and return to HTSB. Qualifying professional teaching experience is defined as four semesters or two years of satisfactory contracted P-12 teaching experience in the new field and level to be added to your valid Hawai`i teaching license. The experience in the new field must be equivalent to at least one year of full time teaching. A minimum of two years’ experience is required even though you complete one year of full time teaching in the new field during the first year. To qualify for adding a field to your valid Hawai`i license, the experience must have been completed during the five years immediately preceding the date of application.
AND
Submit Official transcript(s) with courses for new field listed, with a letter from your institution indicating the coursework was from a SATEP. Submit your transcript and letter with your application.
OPTION C: Teaching experience and Praxis subject tests
Download Verification of Satisfactory Experience and give to your school principal to fill out and return to HTSB. Qualifying professional teaching experience is defined as four semesters or two years of satisfactory contracted P-12 teaching experience in the new field and level to be added to your valid Hawai`i teaching license. The experience in the new field must be equivalent to at least one year of full time teaching. A minimum of two years’ experience is required even though you complete one year of full time teaching in the new field during the first year. To qualify for adding a field to your valid Hawai`i license, the experience must have been completed during the five years immediately preceding the date of application.
AND
Submit official or notarized copy of passing Praxis Subject Test(s) for the new field with your application. If you use score code 8620 your scores will automatically be reported to HTSB and you do not have to submit a copy.
NOTE: Praxis requirements have recently changed. Check the Praxis Chart to ensure you take the correct tests.
4. Pay the licensing fee.
Currently, there is not a fee to add a field to your license. However, applicants should check the website for revisions to the fee payment procedure once HTSB's online licensing system is launched.
