Teachers may add an additional teaching field to a Hawaii Standard or Advanced License by submitting the following documents and using one of the"Add a Field" methods:

1. Submit the application for Adding a Field to an Existing Hawaii Teaching License.
If you answer "yes" to a question in the Professional Fitness section on the application, Section 2, you will be contacted to submit additional documentation.
2. Submit proof of one of the following options: A, B, C, D or E.
3. Pay your licensing fee. Currently there is no fee to "add a field" to your license, but you must remain current with your standard licensing fee payment.
OPTION A) Complete a State Approved Teacher Education Program (SATEP)
Submit the HTSB Institutional Recommendation form from our website.
NOTE: If you completed a Hawaii SATEP since July 1, 2002, you do not have to submit an Institutional Recommendation as your institution will submit verification directly to HTSB.
OPTION B) Teaching experience and coursework from a State Approved Teacher Education Program (SATEP), or the equivalent of a subject major for the new field.
Submit the Verification of Satisfactory Experience form and give to your school principal to fill out and return to HTSB. Qualifying professional teaching experience is defined as one year of at least half-time satisfactory contracted P-12 teaching experience in the new field and level to be added to your valid Hawai`i teaching license. To qualify for adding a field to your valid Hawai`i license, the experience must have been completed during the five years immediately preceding the date of application.
AND
Submit official transcript(s) with 30 credit hours of coursework either from a state approved teacher education program (SATEP) in the new field or the equivalent of a subject major for the new field.
OPTION C) Teaching experience and Praxis subject tests
Submit the Verification of Satisfactory Experience form and give to your school principal to fill out and return to HTSB. Qualifying professional teaching experience is defined as one year of at least half-time satisfactory contracted P-12 teaching experience in the new field and level to be added to your valid Hawai`i teaching license. To qualify for adding a field to your valid Hawai`i license, the experience must have been completed during the five years immediately preceding the date of application.
AND
Submit official or notarized copy of passing Praxis Subject test for the new field with your application. If you use score code 8620 your scores will automatically be reported to HTSB and you do not have to submit a copy.
NOTE: Praxis requirements have recently changed. Check the Hawaii Praxis Table to ensure you take the correct tests.
OPTION D) National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification
Teachers who have attained NBPTS certification while teaching in Hawai’i should only submit the application to add a field. Teachers who did not attain NBPTS certification in Hawaii should submit a copy of their NBPTS certificate with application.
OPTION E) Possess Advanced License or NBPTS Certification in current license field(s) and obtain the equivalent of a subject major OR pass the Praxis Content Test in the new field:
