You must meet the following criteria to receive the Advanced License.
Applicants are responsible for submitting all required materials.
A renewable Advanced License may be granted for ten (10) years to an applicant who submits the following:
1. Submit an application.
Download the application for Advanced Hawaii Teaching License.
2. If you answer "yes" to a question in the Professional Fitness section of the application, Section 2, you will be contacted to submit additional information.
3. Submit proof of one of the following with your application:
A. An official transcript verifying you received a master's, specialist or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution. This degree must be in an area relevant to the teaching field for which a license is sought or a field that improves the practice of teaching. You may not use a degree that was used to obtain a Standard License to also obtain an Advanced License.
OR
B. A notarized copy of your current, valid National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certificate and a notarized copy of your current, valid out of state teaching license. Hawaii licensed teachers do not need to submt a copy of their Standard License or the NBPTS certificate if they earned it while teaching in Hawaii.
4. Submit HTSB Verification of Qualifying Experience for Advanced License to document five (5) out of the last eight (8) years of satisfactory full-time teaching experience in the state which issued your Standard License.
5. Pay the licensing fee.
The license fee of $480 to cover the entire ten year period of the license is the last requirement for your Advanced Hawai'i teaching license. Submit a cashier's check or money order made payable to the Hawai'i Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) with your application.
